This painting is all about smoking. Everyone looking at it inevitably finds themselves inside a cigarette. There is so much personal in this process of smoking, so many emotions, plenty of intimate things. When somebody goes out to have a smoke, he is aware that he is exiting this realm and entering another.
I’ve always wanted to depict the feeling of freedom during a smoke break. When I go out for a smoke, especially with someone else, life freezes for these 10 minutes. We transcend it since cigarettes have a power to stretch time in such a peculiar way! Conversations instantly go beyond their usual framework; surprising revelations tend to happen within this space. We go into nicotine infinity that is burning out together with the times.
Zemfira’s song “Cigarettes” became an inspiration for this painting.
